In my READ 254 course, we spent an entire semester learning about Young Adult Literature. After reading a plethora of young adult novels that were from diverse authors that focused on telling diverse stories, I began to recognize the lack of diversity in the English/ELA classroom. For my final project, I chose to talk about why diverse literature is important to the classroom.

For my K-12 Content Area Literacy Course, I designed a lesson plan for 6th grade that promotes a discussion of diversity in the classroom. In this lesson plan, We All Sing With the Same Voice is the primary text. Students will read the picture book by J. Phillip Miller and watch the popular Sesame Street music video to learn how to talk about diversity.
